Signed by Howard Wilkinson from Spurs for £500,000, Chris Fairclough was a crucial part of the defence with gained promotion from Division Two and then won the League Championship for Leeds in 1991/92.

His partnership with Chris Whyte, where the two central defenders would safeguard the halfway line while the team marauded forward, was crucial that that season’s fast, direct, winning style of play.

Fairclough, the fans’ Player Of The Year in his first season, was a virtual ever-present before he was finally deemed surplus to requirements (and sold to Bolton) after reaching his 30th birthday.

Strange but true: Fairclough finished his career at the nearest League club to Leeds, hanging up his boots at York in February 2001.
